Osteoporosis, Arthritis, Parkinson's, etc.
It consists of a carefully designed and comprehensive system using
gentle repetitive movements of the body, sometimes performed while
seated in a chair or standing with use of the chair for support,
plus restorative yoga postures (which are relaxed supported positions,
using props such as blankets and foam blocks to gently support the
body). All movements are simple and fun yet effective in building
strength, flexibility, and range of motion.
There will be a strong
emphasis on breath awareness and breathing technique, relaxation,
and guided meditation. This class is suitable for anyone with health
concerns and the benefits are accessible even to those recovering

way to relax & renew, to build inner awareness and are infinitely
adaptable to individual needs.

Backbends
in Forwardbends & Forwardbends in Backbends Asana/Meditation
Workshop w/Jin Sung
To gain true insight into backbends it is essential that in many
ways they become more and more like forwardbends. It is also true
that we need a clearer understanding of backbends in the midst of
our forwardbends. During these classes we will explore the commonalities
between forward and backbends in the legs, pelvis, ribcage, and
shoulder girdle. This will help you deepen your practice, and at
the same time blossom the practice into a more intelligent healthy
space. Classes will build on each other so we strongly encourage
you to attend both days. It is possible, however, to attend any
one class, as each will focus on a specific area of the body.
About JinSung
JinSung has been teaching yoga and Taoist breathing for seventeen
years, nine of which he was a zen Buddhist monk. For six years JinSung
was part of the core faculty at Piedmont Yoga Studio, and he now
has his own studio in the East Bay, Oakland Yoga Studio. Studying
for many years with California's senior Iyengar teachers, he feels
he owes his gratitude and inspiration to B.K.S. Iyengar. Today,
JinSung is one of the leading teachers in the Bay Area. With a great
eye and profound hands, he is creative in making seemingly esoteric
aspects of Iyengar yoga approachable and effective in your body.
He practices yoga to support a healthy environment and energy for
meditation. Believing that Asana practice is a deep path that can
help an infinite spectrum of people with different goals, JinSung
loves to teach and share.
The spine The spine needs freedom to move
in all directions. Forward extensions, twists and back arches all
contribute to the spine's health and continued flexibility. Backbends
open, creating space in the chest, benefiting the heart, lungs and
thyroid. After warming up we will mainly focus on Urdhva Dhanurasana
[the backbend] and Ustrasana [camel]. Hope to see you there!
Instructor Sally Schuster moved to Northern
Nevada in 2000 from San Diego where she taught yoga for ten years
and received her Iyengar Yoga certification in 1989. She attended
many workshops from senior Iyengar instructors and gives thanks
to her most influential teachers; Donald Moyer, Mary Dunn and Patricia
Walden. She has also been to India three times to study under Geeta
Iyengar, daughter of BKS Iyengar. “The yogic path is truly an inspiring,
wonderful and lifelong journey.”
This class is a very vigorous amalgam of Yoga

Prepare to sweat and have fun as high energy modern Middle Eastern
music is played during this class.

Partner Yoga a great way to bond and relax
together. Although pregnancy is a very special time for the mother,
it is also a very exciting time for the farther. By practicing double
yoga with the mother the father can feel more included in the excitement
of the pregnancy and birth and you both become more sensitive to
each other’s needs. Since pregnancy is a time when both the woman
and the man can feel anxious, doing the breathing exercises together
will help relieve physical and mental stress. Many subtle lessons
on your relationship with your partner are demonstrated through
partner yoga. You learn how to communicate better non-verbally the
way you will in labor. Breathe, communicate and enjoy stretching
together. Plus learn some fun, relaxing couple massage techniques.
Denise Barclay will be facilitating a
discussion group on how to incorporate and apply the principals
of yoga and the Buddha dharma in your everyday life. This will affect
how we relate to our bodies, emotions and mental states, as well
as our relationships at home, work and to the rest of the human
race. It will be a forum to bring your personal experiences and
questions to your spiritual practice of mindfulness and wholeness.
Check the website or call for more information. The group will meet
for six weeks on Fridays from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., starting
January 19th, 2007. Pre-register as soon as possible, as we are
limiting the number of participants to ten. The cost is $120.00.
Sally McGrew is a certified yoga instructor
who studied Hatha Yoga under the instruction of Kim Orenstein, Director
of Yoga Loka. Her depth of interest in understanding the science
behind yoga began when in her own personal practice she noticed
a significant shift in herself after practicing yoga for only three
consecutive days in a row. These changes were noticeably significant:
body became more relaxed, the active chitter chatter of the mind
subsided, eating behaviors shifted (binge eating), and over time
and overwhelming sense of wellbeing began to take hold.
Sally’s personal experience and changes she noticed in fellow yoga
students motivated her to design a sequence of postures focusing
on Eliminating the Cravings. This sequence of postures assists in
calming and balancing the nervous system allowing you to gently
let go and release your own personal cravings. What does Sally mean
by a Craving? Just to name a few: the obvious over or under eating,
drugs, alcohol, excessive shopping, negative thinking, anger, excessive
talking or gossiping, pleaser personality (inability to set boundaries).
This is a very enjoyable class. Sally will share her personal journey,
with lots of love, humor and scientific data to back up why yoga
works.
Exploring the Body, Connecting
the Mind: Introducing Phoenix Rising Yoga Therapy with JJ
Lee
There is a link between sensations in our bodies
and issues in our lives. Yoga therapy is an invitation to explore
the richness of this connection, as well as experience its beneficial
impact on physical, mental, and emotional health:
Witness what happens in the body while in
a supported posture...
Facilitate an inward journey with reflective
dialogue...
Experience your body as a metaphor for life!
How we show up in our bodies has everything
to do with how we show up in life. Find out how...
The workshop gives participants the opportunity
to stretch-literally and figuratively-in their self awareness, using
elements of yoga as tools for personal growth. The goal of the workshop
is to teach everyone-novices and experienced practitioners alike-how
to "take yoga off the mat and into their lives," says
workshop facilitator JJ Lee. "There is a profound and tangible
link between sensations in our bodies and who and how we are in
our lives. Yoga is an invitation to explore the richness of this
connection, as well as experience its beneficial impact on physical,
mental, and emotional health" says Lee. "Yoga's benefits
are manifold, as most people know, helping to reduce stress, release
tension and fight fatigue, among myriad others. The distinction
of this particular workshop is that it focuses on a therapeutic
approach to yoga-inviting the wisdom of the body to empower a change
in one's life. How we show up in our bodies has everything to do
with how we show up in our lives," explained Lee.

17 Drum Intention Circle w/Liz Broscoe
(If you'd like to borrow a drum, let us know
and just add $5 to your payment)
Drumming is just one of the many different holistic
modalities we can use to raise our vibration, essentially elevating
our mood. When our mood is elevated, causing greater positive emotion,
we are more likely to be able to set an intention and ultimately
create that desire. Drumming Intention circles give participants
time to focus individually on their intentions while drumming. Participants
are taught basic techniques and a rhythm on the djembe drum before
intentions are focused on. Please bring a small piece of paper with
either a personal or global intention written on it.
Liz Broscoe has been drumming for 35 years.
She began her rhythmic endeavors at the age of ten and has been
singing and drumming professionally for 25 years. Since 2000, Liz
has taught West African Djembe, Afro-Cuban Conga, and drum set classes
at Lake Tahoe Community College. Using the power of the drum through
her company "Drumchik Productions", Liz offers a variety
of programs including, West African djembeclasses and workshops,
drumming intention circles, women's and youth empowerment circles,
children's outreach educational performances and corporate team
and staff development workshops. In 2006, Liz facilitated drumming
and dance workshops to more than 8,500 children throughout California
and Nevada. Her work in bringing cultural awareness and education
to the schools was grant funded by the Nevada Arts Council and the
Tahoe Arts Project. Her new show, "Durga, Goddess of the Drum"
recently premiered at the Brewery Arts Center in Carson City Nevada,
and her high energy drum and dance troupe "Java Djembe"
continues to wow audiences. Drumchik Productions is based out of
South Lake Tahoe CA, elevation 6,200 ft., where drumming is experienced
on a higher level.
An interactive dynamic anatomy workshop covering
the anatomy of the spine, subtle energy channels of the body, and
the integration of the bhandhas and breath.
Dr. Taylor Donovan believes that our dynamic
bodies yearn to express health through the changing phases and events
that they live through. Our responsibility as the caretaker of our
own body is to listen, educate, and take good care of our most valued
possession. There is an innate wisdom that the body utilizes to
consistently grow and adapt in its own specific way. There are lessons
hidden in the challenges of our experience if we are willing to
engage them within a meaningful discussion. What worked yesterday
may not work today as our bodies are more like rivers than recipes.
Dr. D is privileged to work with the human body and finds that the
secret to good health isn't hidden in some distant land, book, or
glossy catalog but tends to be sitting in the most unsuspecting
places inside of our own experience.

24 The Yoga of Loving-Kindness:
a dynamic dance of the power of passion, arising from the stillness
of the source of compassion, manifesting as the phenomenal display
of the play of form and emptiness. w/Dr. Marcia Howton
This will be a 2 hour workshop on the "yoking"
(yoga: to yoke) of the flow of our life with the innate, unlimited,
self-arising well-spring of compassion and loving-kindness. We will
begin by stabilizing the attention with shamatha mindfulness-of-breathing
practice. On the foundation of deep relaxation, alert attention,
and the stability that naturally arises from that platform we will
use the faculties of imagination, memory, thought, and knowledge
of the world around us to explore the dance of loving-kindness.
Just as the faculty of learning to walk, to speak, to read or write
has a beginning, a developmental middle, and a mature manifestation,
so too the faculty of learning loving-kindness has a sweet, gentle
starting place, a process of cultivating healthy growth, and a place
of mature presence, ready to act in any and all of life's many faceted
opportunities. We will experience the power of the natural arising
of this force when unencumbered by our reactive patterns, dance
with our own edges, and we will cultivate loving-kindness toward
ourselves first as a segway to an uninhibited flow of loving-kindness
toward others with whom we share our world. We will leave with renewed
resolve and experiential connection to continually allow this enlightened
energy to flow unimpeded in our lives. CEU available for this workshop.

Pregnancy is a transitional time for women, when
many physical & emotional changes take place. Prenatal Yoga
is about honoring these changes in ourselves, our body and our baby.
The practice of yoga prepares the woman's body and breath to open
as it will need to open during labor and childbirth. Learn special
postures to practice during the changing phases of your pregnancy
as well as calming breathing techniques that connect mother and
baby and prepare for a healthy, mindful, more natural approach to
the challenges of labor and birth.
Releasing the Pain
Body is based on the book A New Earth by Ekhart Tolle. Sally will
present ideas and make connections with each posture on how the
practice of yoga brings awareness to the pain-body and in time releases
it. In this class you will see how the ancient practice of yoga
was and continues to support the evolution of our biological and
etheric (energetic) bodies through movement and stillness. What
is the pain-body? Eckhart describes it as "This energy field
of old but still very-much-alive emotion that lives in almost every
human being is the pain-body"
Restorative yoga is a practice that
is meant to rest the organic body. It utilizes props such as bolsters
and blankets to do the work of bones and muscles, and when you have
found your “Ah-h-h” zone, you rest in the poses for 10 to 15 minutes,
sometimes longer. In this small class, you will have the opportunity
to enjoy the lavishness of restorative postures that use all the
props your body wants and needs to hold it in comfort, allowing
the physiological relaxation responses to express to their fullest
extent. There just aren’t enough situations in daily life where
you can say, “I want three of those and two of those, and I think
I’ll take one of these just to support my heels and another little
something to cradle my arms.” This 6 week class will allow you to
explore your habit body and your patterns for holding muscular tension.
Join in for this gentle journey to relaxation.
This series will be limited to a Maximum of
6 participants. Register Early!

Surprisingly in our culture of bounty our
conversations whether internal or with others center on what we
don’t have. We wake up in the morning thinking we didn’t get enough
sleep, we go to bed at night thinking we didn’t get enough done.
Our conversations are dominated with not getting enough exercise,
not having enough time, not being thin enough, not having enough
vacations, not having enough fun, not having enough money, not
being spiritual enough.
The First Journey of the Soul explores our
soul’s relationship with the material world and money. This class
is not about financial planning, budgeting or retirement but about
releasing our tug of war between “our sense of enough”, and the
calling of our soul.
· Come experience
doing Yoga specific to releasing the flow of energy in the first
Chakra, the chakra that releases our blocks with respect to our
relationships to the material world.
· Come explore
the wisdom of ancient texts on the concept of the spiritual flow
of money and the concept of “enough”.
· Come experience
the power of life coaching in releasing the tug of war with “enough.”
· Come and
create a life of meaning rather than feeding the hunger for meaning
with a life struggle in “enough.”
This workshop is facilitated by Ileana Vassiliou,
Registered Yoga Teacher and Master Certified Coach and Lorrie
Pompei Certified Professional Co-active Coach
The triad of a stable asana-for-life
includes sela, samadi, and prajña (ethics or core values,
focused concentration or the ability to stay on task, and wisdom
or how to apply our core values in a focused way to the way we
act, speak, and live our lives moment to moment, day to day.)
It is the path to the fulfillment of genuine happiness, a happiness
not dependent on external circumstances going our way all the
time, rather, a happiness that flows from the wellspring of genuine
well-being deep within each of us. Shamatha - tranquility or quiescence
- is a samadi practice that provides the tools necessary to develop
the stability needed to move us from scattered attending to our
goals, to sustained, consistent movement toward our deepest aspirations.
During this workshop three techniques of Shamatha will be taught,
daily homework will be assigned to reinforce the class learning,
class practice time with question and answer times will be provided.
Application to practice of yoga will be discussed and integrated.
